About The Dry Eye Treatment Center

At The Dry Eye Treatment Center our goal is to diagnose and treat your dry eye early in an effort to help you feel better, see better and to keep your eyes from progressively getting worse. We want to keep your eyes healthy for the rest of your life!

Many people come to us complaining of symptoms of ocular discomfort such as burning, irritation, red eyes, tired eyes, intermittent blurry vision, etc.. Other people are unaware that they have dry eye, environmental allergies or meibomian gland dysfunction and are diagnosed using our state of the art technology and advanced examination techniques.

Regardless of whether you have dry eye, environmental allergies and/or meibomian gland dysfunction patient education is the mainstay of our treatment. Explaining your condition(s) to you, in language you can easily understand, is of uppermost importance and greatly increases compliance. We educate you with an emphasis on creating an awareness of the things in your environment that can exacerbate your symptoms. Armed with this information you can avoid them (i.e. an air vent). We make many holistic recommendations such as using preservative free artificial tears over the course of the day, performing lid hygiene, using desktop and bedside humidifiers, being well hydrated, taking omega 3 fatty acids, getting sufficient sleep, etc..

Our philosophy is that even if you have mild dry eye, environmental allergies or meibomian gland dysfunction you should be educated and treated, sometimes only holistically, so that these conditions don't become progressively worse as a result of ongoing damage to the surface of your eyes and tear producing glands.

This philosophy and treatment are readily accepted by people who are already experiencing symptoms and are aware that they have an issue with their eyes. For people who are not experiencing any symptoms it is not uncommon, even human nature, to be less motivated to embrace medical treatment. Understanding this, Dr. Muller spends a lot of time explaining the chronic and progressive nature of these conditions which results from the inflammation they cause. This ongoing inflammation damages the surface of your eyes, including your tear producing glands which, over time, results in less and less tear production. As this process progresses, your eyes become drier and more uncomfortable such that even people who were previously symptom free tip a balance and become bothered by their symptoms. Often, unfortunately, by this time there has been a lot of damage to your tear producing glands. Even more unfortunate is the fact that the damage to your tear producing glands that has already taken place is irreversible. This is the reason that it is so important to educate and treat you early.

Our goal at The Dry Eye Treatment Center is to keep your eyes healthy, comfortable and seeing well, not only for the short term, but for the long term as well. We don't hesitate to initiate education and treatment if you have symptoms, or signs of dry eye, environmental allergies and/or meibomian gland dysfunction. It is our preference to initiate "aggressive" treatment for a short period of time so as to effect a dramatic improvement quickly. This "aggressive" treatment typically consists of education, holistic recommendations, one or two prescription eye drops and a prescription ointment for bedtime. We then see you back a few weeks later at which time you typically report that your eyes feel much better and that your vision has also improved. It is at this point that Dr. Muller will determine the minimum treatment necessary (mostly holistic) to maintain your ocular health, vision and comfort on a going forward basis.

In many ways dry eye, environmental allergies and meibomian gland dysfunction are similar to high blood pressure and diabetes in that you may not know that you have these conditions unless you are diagnosed on routine screening/examination. You may not have any symptoms and yet you may in fact have one of these conditions. If not diagnosed and treated early, these conditions will progress, ultimately causing symptoms which would lead to their diagnosis. Like hypertension and diabetes, dry eye, environmental allergies and meibomian gland dysfunction are chronic conditions, not curable, but manageable. The key is not to let them progress to the point where they have caused a lot of damage to your eyes and therefore require a lot of ongoing treatment.

Our goal is to diagnose dry eye, environmental allergies and/or meibomian gland dysfunction early, before significant damage has taken place and while only minimal and holistic therapy is necessary. As chronic conditions, emphasis needs to be on managing these conditions rather than curing them. Our goal is to always have you seeing as well as possible, being as comfortable as possible, and being on as little therapy as possible with minimal disruption to your daily activities and your quality of life. Educating you regarding these conditions and setting realistic expectations about what you can expect in the future is paramount.

Dry eye, environmental allergies and meibomian gland dysfunction are multifaceted and multifactorial conditions; they are very individual. At The Dry eye Treatment Center each patient is evaluated thoroughly. Dr. Muller takes a very detailed history including your specific symptoms, medical history, medications you take, how many hours per day you read, etc.. After a full examination and testing, a customized, personalized treatment plan is created. Each treatment regimen is tailored to your particular lifestyle and personal philosophy. Therapy that may work for one patient may not work for the next. It is Dr. Muller's goal to individualize all of the available treatment modalities for each patient. Over time your treatment is tailored based upon your progress.

It is of uppermost importance to recognize and diagnose dry eye, environmental allergies and/or meibomian gland dysfunction early so that the appropriate treatment can be instituted. If untreated, these conditions will worsen, as they are chronic and progressive. Empowering you through education is essential, and paramount to compliance. Dry eye, environmental allergies and/or meibomian gland dysfunction that has progressed to become moderate to severe, or severe, is terribly uncomfortable, decreases visual acuity, increases the risk/incidence of infection and can be sight threatening. The key to successfully treating these conditions is genuinely partnering with you, the patient, through education so that we can work toward the common goal of optimizing your lifelong ocular health together.
